Grand Addition / Remodel
Should I stay or should I go? Since their great ol’ house had been nurturing them for so long, they decided to stay and return the favor – and it all started in the kitchen, the center of their daily life. With a passion for growing and preparing their own food at home, they needed their “working kitchen” to have a tune-up: cabinets, countertops, and finishes were updated; some appliances and lighting were too; a reach-in pantry was added; layout and circulation were improved to better match their workflow. The desired exterior windows with ventilation and views to the garden were kept intact.
The family bathroom was also over-hauled and enlarged to better suit a growing and active family of four. Being a shared space, it was important to provide privacy – this was achieved by creating compartments, isolating the toilet and shower so two or more people can use the facilities comfortably. This type of bathroom is what some call a European design; the vanity is essentially open to the hallway, but the separate enclosures avoid embarrassing moments if someone accidentally barges in. Ample natural daylighting along with improved overhead and task lighting was implemented, consistent with the entire project.
A funky “catch-all” space with a few divided rooms off the back of the house was removed and replaced with a true family room – vaulted, airy, and bright, it opens to the outside with French doors onto the garden and patio with hot tub. Inside, it’s a multi-purpose room, one for gathering, playing, relaxing or studying; tucked-away along one side is a laundry nook as well. With a small interior window opening from the kitchen, a question about homework can be answered while dinner is being prepared. Perfect for guests who come to stay or friends who sleep-over, the family room offers a separation while maintaining a sense of connectedness.
