Willard C Dixon Architect

Friendly Abode w/ ADU

It’s not everyday we get to work with a client who’s also a master sculptor and carver. When he mentioned that he would like to carve some of the beams and doors in the project, we were delighted! The owners are moving back into town and they want to fix this place up to be their “retirement home.” The main design thrust was to give the 1945 house a new lease on life, a well-needed fresh start to complement and enhance it’s good ol’ bones. To start, we added an open and airy carport with a mudroom connector; a new laundry room; an office; a new kitchen; a new front, covered porch; and a new, vaulted living room with clerestory windows and a wrap-around exterior veranda for easy access to and from the ample yard and garden. Home Sweet Home! Plus, an 800 SF ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) with artist workshop off the alley was added to bookend the beautiful garden.
